So, I woke up to a beautiful morning yesterday where I’m currently crashing in Mill Valley, CA. The pouring rain finally stopped, the sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and the weather was cool and crisp: a perfect fall morning! I gathered my trail running gear and drove a few minutes up the road to Tennessee Valley for a 9 mile trail run during which I encountered countless hawks, cotton tails, deer, myriad tracks, and even two very healthy looking coyotes (I kept my distance from those boys after they leapt across the trail in front of me).
On the way back to my crash pad, I stopped by a local coffee shop to check in online, respond to some e-mails, etc. and then got dragged into a yoga session with my host, JW. I was a little hesitant at first since my last yoga experience was quite painful, but I gave in and went over to Red Dragon Yoga in downtown Mill Valley, CA. They had this deal that, for just $10.00, gave me 10 yoga classes. It was an offer I couldn’t refuse… In any case, we did bikram yoga that morning and within minutes, I was crying for mommy. I think I lost like 20 lbs. of water weight and nearly passed out from the heat and the ridiculous poses. Whoever said yoga was for wussies obviously hadn’t tried it: it’s hard! After an hour, the class ended and I collapsed into a useless heap of sweat and broken muscles. On the way out, I got to talking with the staff and somehow got to chatting about music, etc. One thing lead to another and, before I knew it, they had a copy of my album “Something Out There” in their stereo and were playing it at their studio. Pretty cool community out here in Mill Valley! Anyway, I had a great time over there and they were super supportive of me and my music (oh, AND my total and utter inexperience with yoga poses), so I’ve gotta give ‘em some props. Dare I head back today for round two?? Only time will tell… my muscles say “no”, but my mind says “yes”.
Later on in the day, while I was still recovering, I managed to get a fair bit done on the music front. I picked up a few other gigs, set up some meetings with a few musicians re: some upcoming projects, and even got a chance to head down to OTR Studios in Belmont, CA to pick up the latest rough mix of my second recording project to date from engineer/producer Cookie Marenco. While I definitely need to re-track some of the acoustic guitar and vocals from the live sessions with Brain (drums), Jon Evans (bass) and Rob Ickes (dobro), I’m really excited about where things are headed. It’s starting to sound like an album, alright! From here, it seems as though I need to practice, practice, practice some of my guitar and vocal parts that were less than stellar during the last session and then come back fresh to the studio and crush it. Period. Once that’s done, we’ll move on to adding some additional stuff (keys, possibly some fiddle, some background vocals, and a few other notable guest performers). So far, it’s been pretty wild to record with Brain (credits include drums/percussion with Guns N’Roses, Primus, and Tom Waits), Jon Evans (plays bass with Tori Amos), and Rob Ickes (9-time “best bluegrass musician/dobro player” by the IBMA). Cookie has really pulled together a killer team for this project and I’m getting excited to see who we can wrangle in next (and what my budget will allow!).
Since I was in the south bay for the check-in with the gang at OTR Studios, I gave a ring to my buddy Jon who somehow convinced me to pay a visit to the local climbing gym in Belmont, CA with him later that night. I happened to have my gear with me, so I allowed a suspicious “why not” and prepared for the worst after a hard trail run and bikram yoga earlier in the day. The session at the gym didn’t disappoint as I pretty much wore myself out after about 6 completed climbs (and many more failed attempts to reach the top of a route). With my arms shaking and about to fall off, we got something to eat, hung out for a bit, then I headed back to Mill Valley, CA weary and broken from a solid day out.
Today, it’s back to checking out a few apartments (I have one great option that I’m considering now), plugging away on the music, and possibly heading to some (gulp) yoga later in the day. My body still feels broken, but a little exercise definitely does the mind and the body good when there’s a lot going on. Come find me at Red Dragon later today!
